Culturally Curious Art Lecture Series: Pixel Perfect – Chuck Close & Photorealist Painting
Wed, September 9 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Pixel Perfect: Chuck Close & Photorealist Painting
Enter the mesmerizing world of Chuck Close and the Photorealist movement, where artists challenged everything we thought we knew about painting by creating meticulously detailed works that seem to leap off the canvas as living photographs. Close’s monumental portraits—painted pixel by painstaking pixel using techniques that transform tiny squares of color into startlingly lifelike faces—represent both the pinnacle of technical virtuosity and a profound meditation on how we see and process visual information. Through examining Close’s revolutionary grid system, his evolution from black-and-white masterpieces to vibrant color experiments, and his place within the broader Photorealist movement alongside artists like Richard Estes and Audrey Flack, this program reveals how the pursuit of perfect visual realism becomes, paradoxically, one of the most abstract and conceptual approaches to making art.
