Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was one of the supreme musical talents of the 19th century who excelled as a composer, conductor, pedagogue, and pianist. In his compositions he used daring harmonies that would open the door to 20th century musical ideas. He was also the creator of the symphonic poem, a form that would become very popular during the 2nd half of the 19th century.

Jeffrey Engel will discuss Liszt’s development of his symphonic poems and play excerpts from them.
