Wide Open Spaces: Great Landscapes in Art
Journey through the evolving relationship between artists and the natural world as landscape painting transformed from mere background decoration to one of art’s most profound and expressive genres across cultures and centuries. From the serene classical landscapes of Claude Lorrain and the dramatic Dutch Golden Age skies of Jacob van Ruisdael, to the revolutionary plein air techniques of the Impressionists and the bold American wilderness visions of the Hudson River School, this program traces how different artistic traditions have interpreted and reimagined the land around us. What drives artists to stand before mountains, fields, and forests, attempting to capture not just their appearance but their very essence and emotional resonance? Discover how the simple act of painting the world outside our windows has become a profound meditation on place, memory, climate, and our ever-changing connection to the earth itself.
