SUMMARY:Icons on Ammo Boxes: Christian Art of Hope and Sorrow from the War in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Fairfield University is hosting  an exhibition of Ukrainian sacred art created from ammunition boxes recovered from the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war.\n\nSince 2015\, shortly after the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine\, artists Sonia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko have transformed fragments of ammunition boxes recovered from the front lines into sacred works of art. Drawing from the centuries-old tradition of Orthodox icon writing\, their internationally recognized Icons on Ammo Boxes project bears witness to the tragedy of war while offering prayer and hope for a just peace.\nThe Icons on Ammo Boxes project has been displayed all over the world\, including recently at the Scottish Parliament (2025)\, the Parliament of Finland (2025)\, and in Rome at St. Peter’s Cathedral (2025). Last year\, in the exhibition Wartime Beauty\, the project was on display at Fordham University’s Refuge Gallery through the university’s Orthodox Christian Studies Center. DESCRIPTION:Escape to the shoreline for a relaxing adults-only summer day trip to Hammonasset Beach State Park! We’ll start the day bright and early with plenty of time to unwind\, explore\, and enjoy the Connecticut coast at your own pace. Guests can enjoy convenient pick-up and drop-off access between two scenic beach areas within the park. \nAt Meigs Point\, located on the southeastern tip of the park\, discover a beautiful rocky shoreline\, nature trails\, and possible seal sightings\, and the popular Meigs Point Nature Center (free admission includes a touch tank\, aquariums\, and more). This section of the beach is known for its coarser sand\, seashells\, and peaceful coastal scenery. Prefer soft sand and classic beach lounging? Head over to West Beach\, a wide sandy stretch perfect for swimming\, sunbathing\, beach walks\, and soaking up the summer sunshine. West Beach also offers accessible parking and nearby bathhouses\, snack shack and vending machines for added convenience. \nAfter a tranquil morning and early afternoon of beachcombing and relaxation\, we’ll head to Lenny & Joe’s Fish Tale (lunch is not included in cost) in Madison to refresh and refuel with delicious seaside favorites. Enjoy the fun outdoor picnic atmosphere featuring counter service\, covered pavilions\, and a nostalgic carousel that makes for the perfect ending to a carefree summer day at the shore. \nNote: Umbrellas\, beach chairs\, and small coolers are allowed.
