Fanny Mendelssohn(1805-1846) was one of the most musically gifted women of the 19th century. At the age of 13 she could play from memory all 48 preludes and fugues from Bach’s “Well -Tempered Clavier.†Her brother Felix thought she was the better pianist of the two and he was considered one of the greats of his day. She composed more than 400 works over 27 years, but only a handful were performed in public or published in her lifetime.
Jeffrey Engel will detail “The Other Mendelssohn’s†life, play excerpts from her oeuvre and explain why she didn’t have a more successful career.
